Fair officials said this is the year the Chinese Cresteds' hold on the World's Ugliest Dog title may end.
A boxer, shepherd, Shar Pei, Chinese Pug and mutt or two are vying for the title this year, Sonoma-Marin Fair spokeswoman Vicki DeArmon said.
The purse for the winner has doubled to $1,000 this year, DeArmon said.

For the second time this month, researchers report success using a novel type of anticancer pill to curb the growth of inherited tumors that often defy standard treatment. Called olaparib, the experimental pill is a member of a new class of drugs called PARP inhibitors that prevent unstable cancer cells from repairing themselves.

Bed Bath Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) posted an unexpected rise in quarterly profit by cutting costs to offset slumping demand for home furnishings, and the retailer's shares rose more than 6 percent.

Transportation investigators Wednesday discovered "anomalies" in an essential control circuit of a track where a fatal crash between two Washington subway trains killed nine people.
Each section of the transit system's track contains a circuit that transmits and receives signals that generate speed commands for trains, said Debbie Hersman of the National Transportation Safety Board. She said the circuits are "vital providing information to the operators and the train itself when on automatic."

Saturnian moon Enceladus contain sodium salts, which is the best
evidence so far that the satellite harbors a liquid water ocean.
NASA’s Cassini probe

More than 50,000 people visited the historic town of La Orotava for the Corpus Cristi festival last week, where the largest sand carpet in the world was displayed in front of the La Orotava Town Hall.
The plaza measures 46.5 metres x 10.50 metres, with a total surface of 950 square metres, and 912 metres of usable space.
Materials used to make this magnificent carpet are chiefly collected from las Cañadas del Teide, and the sands' colours are all totally natural.

Scientists are hopeful of developing a simple urine test which will be able to detect appendicitis.
The condition may be life-threatening without emergency surgery, but can be difficult to diagnose, especially in younger people.
Now a team at the Children's Hospital Boston has pinpointed a protein in the urine which might be a tell tale sign of the condition.

Weight-loss surgery could help women - but not men - reduce their risk of cancer, research suggests.
Obesity is known to increase the risk of many types of cancer, but it was unclear whether surgery to address the problem also cut the risk of cancer.
Now a Swedish study, published in Lancet Oncology, has shown that weight-loss surgery is associated with a 42% reduction in cancer levels in women.
Experts believe the surgery's impact on hormone levels could be key.
